Unfortunately we didn't have a chance to visit in winter, but the Samba-stone river area is absolutely gorgeous in the summer, and a fabulous place to relax next to the water.
It's also right on the boarder of Gunma and Saitama, and there was a bridge connecting the two prefectures.... so naturally being the mature adults that my friends and I are, we spent a fair amount of time jumping from one prefecture to the other, and standing with one foot in each prefecture. Ha ha.
